  Ⅰ.Introduction

Slang is defined as"language of a highly colloquial type, considered as below the level of standard educated speech, and consisting either of new words or of current words employed in some special sense"in the Oxford English Dictionary.Slang is one of the most active and sensitive parts of English language and an effective weapon in communication. They are widely used by every class. Some successful English slang as O.K and cool can be heard almost everywhere in the world.
Dai Xiaobing and Wei Zhizhong estimated that there are at least 600,000 English words and 15,000 are slang. The words known by American and English people but may not be wholly used are about 10,000—20,000.2,000 of them are slang.Slang account for 10%.
Liu Jianfang stated that in the past, people thought that slang which did not belong to standard English should not be used in written English. However, with the development of language, slang was often found in newspapers, works of famous writers, biographies and even in the speeches and press conferences of American presidents. In the famous American magazine Times,an article titled"The Senators vs the Spooks"was once found. This article reported the confrontation between American senators and CIA on some issue. The meaning of"the senators"was obvious."Spooks"in slang means"agent provocateur".Here it stands for the well-known C.I.A.It was briefly estimated that in the very famous American novelist Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn numerous slang were found. In chapter 31 and 34,there are more than 20 slang and idioms.Slang are not only used in magazines, newspapers, literature works, but also in the speeches and press conferences of American president."Here we go again"which implies that the speaker is impatient with something was often used by American ex-president Ronald Reagan.Once he was troubled by the same delicate question,he would blurt these words out.
The importance of English slang as key factors in the communication of English as a second or foreign language is a topic that has commanded the attention of researchers worldwide, also in China.

  Ⅱ.The Definition of Slang

The social and psychological complexities captured in slang vocabulary make the term difficult to define. There have been various definitions of slang since its appearance. Some of them were quoted here:
"A peculiar kind of vagabond language, always hanging on the outskirts of legitimate speech, but continually straying or forcing its way into the most respectable company,is what we call slang"
The diction that results from the favorite game among the young and lively of playing with words and renaming things and actions;some invent new words,or mutilate or misapply the old,for the pleasure of novelty, and others catch up such words for the pleasure of being in the fashion"
"Language, words and phrases of a vigorous, colorful, facetious,or taboo nature, invented for specific occasions,or uses,or derived from the unconventional use of the standard vocabulary."(SCD)
Slang is the language of a highly colloquial type, considered as below the level of standard educated speech, and consisting either of new words or of current words employed in some special sense.(Oxford English Dictionary)
Slang is the very informal words, phrases, etc commonly used in speech, esp between people from the same social group or who work together, not considered suitable for formal contexts and often not in use for long.
It is really hard to define slang. But we can see from the definitions that the prejudice once people adopted to slang has long since been removed. This resulted from the more and more widely use of slang.

  Ⅲ.The History of English Slang

According to Partridge, slang is almost as old as connected speech itself. It is probably safe to assume that at first there was speech, then speech formal and informal;and slangy;finally, formal, informal, slangy, and canting.
Liu Xiaopei and Zeng Yutao mentioned that it was showed that slang began as early as the Roman time. For example,"caput"in Latin means"head","la tete"in French and"la testa"in Italian which originated from"testa"mean"earthen pot";"la gamba"in Italian came form the word"gamoba"means"hoof".Romans used the formal words to express"head"and"leg"in written language. However, they used"pot"and"hoof"to express"head"and"leg"in oral language. In the 19th century, the influence coming form middle class and lower class people enlarged. This made the vocabulary and formation ways of slang abundant.Lower class people were the origin of language patterns. To get rid of the bad influence of industrial revolution, speechmakers and writers coming from middle and lower classes began to use different kinds of words to keep away from kinds of sensitive issues. Then slang began to be used more and more often.
